Are you looking forward to Cultural Dog Sledding Experience? Join us for this 5-day tour where we explore the Uummannaq Fjord by dogsled and experience Greenlandic culture first-hand with the residents of a small settlement.

Though the Inuit have used dogsleds for thousands of years. Greenland is the one of the only places in the world that still uses them for traditional purposes.

Our mushers are all local hunters with large pack of dogs.

They use them to:

  • Hunt and fish throughout the winter.
  • Dog sled races
  • Dog sledding experience
  • Family trips
  • ETC.

Explore the enormous icebergs and mountains of the magnificent Uummannaq Fjord by this natural inuit cultural dog sledding experience, visit one of Greenland’s remote settlements, and (hopefully) see the northern lights from one of the darkest places on Earth.

We always encourage you to try and get a window seat for your flight from Ilulissat to Qaarsut, and again for the helicopter transfer to Uummannaq. The views of the Uummannaq Fjord as you make the 15-minute journey are spectacular, and you will have the perfect overview of Uummannaq as you approach the island.

We will collect you at the heliport and transfer you to your accommodation to settle in. In the late afternoon, we'll dine together with the local hunters who will accompany us on our epic journey and brief you about weather conditions and plans for the upcoming days.
After a hearty breakfast, we'll join the mushers as they finish preparing the dogs for our journey.

Dogsledding across the frozen sea ice is a very peaceful way to travel that brings you more in tune with nature. There is no thrumming engine, just the sound of the dogs panting and padding in front of you under the soft guidance of the musher. You are not sealed in a heated cocoon, but rather feel the bite of the fresh air as you travel as the Inuit have done for centuries.

Our destination is one of the 7 small settlements of the Uummannaq Fjord. It will take us about 4 hours to get there where we will be greeted by local families waiting to welcome us with warm drinks and food. We will spend the rest of the afternoon chatting with our hosts, learning about Greenlandic culture, and exploring the settlement. We share the evening meal with our hosts and stay overnight in the settlement.
We say farewell to our lovely hosts and embark on another dogsledding journey through the beautiful landscapes of the Uummannaq Fjord. As we travel towards our next campsite, we will explore a region of large icebergs that have broken off one of the numerous glaciers in the area and are now stuck fast in the sea ice.

Once we arrive, you can spend the afternoon going for short hikes or learning how to maintain dogsledding equipment from the mushers. In the evening, we'll enjoy a communal meal with traditional Greenlandic food and then head outside (if it is clear) to watch the magnificent northern lights dance overhead.
After two days on a dogsled, you should be quite accustomed to travelling in this way and can sit back, relax and enjoy the journey back to Uummannaq.

Once we are back in town, we will say farewell to the dogs and our mushers and return to our accommodation. You have the rest of the afternoon free to rest or start to explore Uummannaq itself.
Your flight from Uummannaq departs in the afternoon so you have all morning to relax or explore Uummannaq. We highly recommend you check out our "What to do in Uummannaq" page for self-guided excursions and ideas of what to see and do in town.

We'll then drop you at the heliport to say a temporary goodbye, as we are sure you'll come back to visit again - perhaps to experience the Summer next time.
